What Abby AI is: decision support explained
Abby AI is a clinical decision-support tool used by Abby clinicians. It prepares each consultation by surfacing relevant patient history, medications, and recent results, and it helps clinicians draft notes after the appointment. Abby AI does not diagnose, prescribe, or make clinical decisions. Every clinical decision at Abby is made by an AHPRA-registered Specialist GP or Nurse Practitioner. AI makes a 10-minute consultation feel like the 40-minute one it should be.

What "decision support" means
Clinical decision support is software that helps a clinician make a better, faster decision by surfacing the right information at the right moment. It has been used in health care for decades — drug interaction checkers, reminder systems, pathology alerts. Abby AI is a modern version of the same principle, built for the way primary care actually happens.
It does not take decisions. It supports the person who does.
What Abby AI actually does
Across an Abby consultation, Abby AI does three jobs:
Before the consult — preparation. Abby AI reads the patient's record and prepares a summary of what is relevant for today's visit. Current medications. Recent pathology. Previous concerns. Allergies. Important context from past appointments. This is what a long-term family GP would have in their head already. It gives our clinicians a five-minute head start.
During the consult — reference. If the clinician needs to check a drug interaction, a guideline, or a past result, Abby AI surfaces the information in seconds instead of minutes.
After the consult — note drafting. Abby AI helps the clinician turn the consultation into a structured clinical note. The clinician reviews, edits, and approves every note before it enters your record. Abby AI does not write to your record unsupervised.
What Abby AI does not do
Abby AI does not diagnose. It does not prescribe. It does not make clinical decisions. It does not replace the clinician. It does not see patients. It does not run the consultation.
Every diagnosis, every prescription, every referral, every certificate issued at Abby is a decision made by an AHPRA-registered clinician — a Specialist GP or Nurse Practitioner. Clinical responsibility sits with the clinician, where it belongs. See what makes a Specialist GP in Australia and what a Nurse Practitioner is in Australia for the clinicians behind every decision.
The human-in-the-loop standard
Abby has a strict human-in-the-loop standard. Any AI-generated summary, note, or suggestion is reviewed by the clinician before it affects your care. Our internal measure for this is the clinician disapproval rate — the proportion of AI-drafted notes that the clinician corrects or rejects.
Across Abby, the disapproval rate on AI-drafted notes is 0.03%. Both sides of that statistic matter: clinicians almost always accept the draft (meaning the AI is doing useful work), and when they disagree, they correct it (meaning the human is genuinely in the loop, not rubber-stamping).
How Abby AI is built and governed
Abby AI is developed under the clinical oversight of our Chief Medical Officer Dr Ramu Nachiappan and Clinical Director Dr Bosco Wu, who sits on the NSW AMA Council. Its behaviour is reviewed continuously against Australian clinical standards. It is trained on de-identified clinical data with strict privacy controls, and it is subject to the same security and privacy regime as the rest of your record.
We do not use Abby AI for things it is not designed for. We do not use it for patient-facing diagnosis. We do not use it in place of clinician judgement. We use it where it can genuinely free up our clinicians to do what only clinicians can do — look at you, listen to you, and think about you.
Why we call it Abby AI
Because it is ours, and because its job is to quietly make the clinician look and feel like they've been paying attention — the way the best family GPs did. Not a chatbot. Not "powered by AI" as a marketing line. A tool named for the clinic it belongs to, used by the clinic it belongs to.
Privacy and your data
Abby AI operates within Abby's privacy framework. Your data is stored in Australia, encrypted, and only accessible to the clinicians involved in your care. Abby AI does not share your information with third parties. See our privacy policy for the full detail.
Frequently asked questions
Will I ever talk to Abby AI instead of a clinician?
No. You talk to a clinician. Abby AI is an internal tool used by the clinician to prepare for and support the consultation.
Could Abby AI get something wrong?
Yes — as with any software, AI can be imperfect. That is why a clinician reviews and approves every output that affects your record. The 0.03% disapproval rate reflects the system working exactly as intended: the human stays in the loop.
Is Abby AI replacing doctors?
No. Abby AI is the opposite of a replacement. It exists so that our Specialist GPs and Nurse Practitioners can spend more time on the part of the consultation only they can do — thinking clinically, listening to the patient, making a judgement.
Do I have to use a service that uses AI?
Abby AI operates inside the consultation. You can always see a clinician at an in-person practice if you prefer not to use a service that uses clinical decision support. If you're uncertain, our when telehealth is right for you guide may help.
Who regulates this?
Clinical decision-support software used in Australian health care sits within the regulatory remit of the TGA, the Digital Health Agency, and AHPRA (for the clinicians using it). Abby AI is designed and operated to meet the standards expected of software in this category.
