Can I get a referral for imaging scans?
Last Updated
March 4, 2025
Short Answer

Yes! Abby doctors and some Abby nurse practitioners can provide referrals for X-rays, MRIs, ultrasounds, and CT scans if medically necessary. You will receive a referral letter via email, which you can take to a radiology clinic. Imaging referrals provided by Nurse Practitioners may not be eligible for bulk-billed testing and may be considered private referrals.

If you need a medical imaging scan, Abby practitioners can issue a radiology referral, allowing you to book an appointment at any imaging centre.

Steps to Get a Referral for an Imaging Scan

  1. Book an appointment with an Abby practitioner.
  2. Describe your symptoms and explain why you need a scan.
  3. Your doctor will assess whether an imaging scan is necessary.
  4. If appropriate, they will send a referral via email.
  5. Use your referral at any radiology clinic to get your scan.

What Types of Scans Can I Get Referrals For?

X-rays – Suspected fractures, joint pain, chest infections

Ultrasounds – Pregnancy, abdominal pain, soft tissue injuries

CT Scans – Head injuries, internal bleeding, chest scans

MRI Scans – Back pain, nerve damage, soft tissue injuries

Are Imaging Scans Bulk-Billed?

  • Some X-rays and ultrasounds may be bulk-billed at select radiology clinics.
  • CT scans and MRIs often require out-of-pocket costs, depending on the provider.

How Do I Get My Scan Results?

  • The radiology clinic will send your results directly to Abby Health.
  • You’ll receive an SMS notification once your results are available.
  • Book a follow-up consultation to review your scan with a practitioner.

💡 Tip: If you receive an imaging referral from an Abby Nurse Practitioner, please note that your imaging referral may be private, which means you may need to pay out of pocket for the tests. You can discuss this with your Nurse Practitioner during your consultation, and check with your imaging clinic for expected costs prior to testing.
